Gymnastics – Overview

Gymnastics is a sport that involves performing sequences of movements that require strength, flexibility, balance, agility, and coordination. It can be practiced individually or as part of a team, and it encompasses various disciplines such as artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline gymnastics, and acrobatic gymnastics. Competitions are held at regional, national, and international levels, with athletes showcasing their skills on apparatus like the balance beam, uneven bars, vault, floor exercise, and rings.

Gymnastics is physically demanding and emphasizes artistry and precision in movements.

Several international organizations govern gymnastics, each overseeing different disciplines within the sport:

1. The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), or the International Gymnastics Federation, is the overarching governing body for all gymnastics disciplines worldwide.

2. The FIG is divided into various technical committees, each responsible for a specific gymnastics discipline such as artistic, rhythmic, trampoline, and acrobatic.

3. Additionally, many countries have their own national gymnastics federations, which oversee the sport at the domestic level and implement the rules and regulations set by the FIG.

The headquarters of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), the governing body for gymnastics worldwide, is located in Lausanne, Switzerland.
